The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is an insurance card that guarantees the coverage of the care you need in the event of a health problem in another European country.

The EHIC only grants the right to essential care during a temporary stay abroad. It does not cover the following treatments:

  • scheduled treatment abroad
  • private clinic care abroad
  • medical treatment on board a cruise ship
  • repatriation

In which countries is the EHIC valid?

The EHIC is valid in the Member States of the European Union (EU) , Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Please note: the EHIC is not valid in the country where you live.

How does the EHIC work?

If you receive medical treatment abroad, the provider, for example a hospital, turns to your insurance directly to recover the costs. Depending on the conditions of your insurance policy and the amount of your deductible, your insurer determines how much of the reimbursement and how much you have to pay yourself.

Please note: the EHIC is not valid for scheduled care. Check with your insurance to find out the coverage conditions for scheduled medical treatments abroad.

You live and work or study in the Netherlands

Do you live and work or study in the Netherlands? If you are affiliated with Dutch health insurance, the EHIC is automatically listed on the back of your insurance card. If not, ask your insurer for it.

You live abroad and work in the Netherlands

If you live abroad but work in the Netherlands, apply for your EHIC directly from your Dutch health insurance.

For eligible family members, you can apply for an EHIC from the CAK (information in Dutch).

You live abroad and receive a Dutch retirement pension or allowance

If you live abroad and receive a Dutch retirement allowance or pension and you are affiliated through the CAK, you can apply for an EHIC from the CAK (information in Dutch) for yourself- even and for your beneficiaries.

You will receive your EHIC by post within 7 days of the request.
