Understanding TSO Basics : The term TSO is an acronym for Technical Standards Order, which means the product has received United States Civil Aviation Authority (FAA) production approval for that specific type.

Meeting TSO (Technical Standard Order) requirements is one of these characteristics. Much more than a checkbox, it's important assurance that your headset is compatible with other equipment and has been rigorously tested to meet or exceed the demands of your flight environment.

Technical Standard Order

Technical Standard Order ( TSO for short) are detailed airworthiness specifications issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for parts and fittings of civil aircraft .

The specifications serve as a basis for the development of devices and attachments for aircraft. Compliance with the applicable specification is certified by the FAA for a part and piece of equipment through the TSO approval.

Approval

A TSO approval gives permission to manufacture a product that can be installed in an aircraft. In order to be approved for installation in an aircraft, the product must meet minimum airworthiness requirements for the specific aircraft type and this must be proven in a separate test. An approval according to TSO is therefore not an automatic permission to install the product in an aircraft, this in turn requires a review by the FAA. [1]

Validity in Europe

In Europe, the European Technical Standard Approval, ETSO, applies. They are issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and are therefore primarily applicable to devices used in civil, commercial aviation within the EU.
