There is no point in re-pitching the difficulty of making a good video game adaptation. I've already done it to you on my review of ARCANE , and if you want to know more I see it refers to the latter. So let's jump straight in with Nathan, Sully and Chloe Frazer on board this adaptation of Uncharted .
Uncharted is an action-adventure video game, very inspired by Tomb Raider and Indiana Jones . We embody Nathan Drake, a forty-something explorer who deserves to be an agile adventurer? extremely lucky, and whose adventures are characterized by exploring the most magnificent places on the planet, and decimating armies of mercenaries using an arsenal without limit. Before getting to the heart of the matter of this adaptation. It is important to point out to you that the Uncharted games, are very cinematic. A debate exists in the video game community between narratology (the fact of privileging the story to the ludic aspect of a game) and ludology (the fact of privileging the ludic aspect of a video game to its narration ). The Uncharted saga on console has undoubtedly chosen to be based on narration, and to focus above all on the story and to choose a playful aspect, which is also called " gameplay ", simple and repetitive but effective and immersive. Of course, I encourage you to at least try one of the games, which are real video game masterpieces, don't miss out!
Ruben Fleitcher , director of Welcome to Zombieland , Venom , and Gansgster Squad , then takes the controls of this adaptation after many directors have thrown in the towel before him. A five-star cast with him embarked on this adventure with: Tom Holland , Mark Wahlberg , Tati Grabrielle and Antonio Banderas .
Half martini, half vodka in a martini glass, the recipe for a good James… Bond.
The film tells us about the meeting between young Nathan Drake and Victor "Sully" Sullivan, a disreputable treasure seeker who worked with Drake's brother, Sam, who disappeared during an expedition. Both then set off across the world in search of Magellan's treasure lost somewhere between Spain and Vietnam. But they will be quickly overtaken by a group of mercenaries led by Santiago Moncada, played by Antonio Banderas .
The first thing that strikes with the film is the casting. All players who have played the game before have obviously asked themselves the same question: why Tom Holland to play Nathan Drake, an explorer in his forties? The film defuses this question from the first scene. Very inspired by the 3rd game, she takes place on board a plane, where Nathan is hung in the void by a strap while a horde of enemies falls all around him. The echoes with the game are made directly. However, the scene is different enough to make us understand one thing: we are faced with a re-reading of the myth created by games .. There is no point then in comparing them, it is rather necessary to seek to bring them together and to flush out the various inspirations! The film is not a feature-for-feature adaptation of the Uncharted universe , but a free adaptation strongly inspired by events that took place in the games.
So let 's treat Uncharted as such and therefore primarily as an adventure film. And let's start by admitting one thing. The current blockbuster landscape being dominated by Marvel and its superheroes. It is good to find adventures on a human scale . Unchartedagain respects the principles of what it adapts: a place, an enigma, an action scene, a revelation. This scheme works pretty well! If the film is not in the originality level scenario, where betrayals and discoveries are linked in a linear and predictable way throughout the film. He is greatly helped by his rhythm which remains pleasant. And if we do not always understand the motivations of the characters, with the exception of Drake who is looking for the treasure hoping to find his brother. We pleasantly follow these archetypes of characters evolve from puzzles to puzzles, until the final outcome.
The Olympic flame.
There is something really palpable in this film, but which we touch as much as the director. This already from the sets, almost all built in the studio giving a realistic atmosphere to the environments, but also these characters and the progressive affirmation of Tom Holland in the skin of Nathan Drake, which we feel as the film progresses. adventure take in insurance and involvement. Until giving chills in the last quarter of the film when the musical theme of Drake appears on the screen. Without however touching the main sap of the game, namely this delicate mixture between history and adventure, the film understands its structure. Giving the impression of a long trailer of an hour and a half, fills with promise.
In sum , Uncharted is a plan plan rereading of what it adapts. A film that understands above all how the games work more than their dramatic stakes. But which nevertheless remains a good adventure film, which if it does not revolutionize the genre: embrace it with joy. It's a promising family film that has the potential to create a good cinematic universe with an extra side. Fans of the game will not find the sensations provided by what they liked, but paradoxically they will be able to find the flavor and the thrill of adventure.
Uncharted hits theaters February 16, 2022.
